DiGRA 2026 Inspired Student Games

As part of a TU Dublin game development module, third-year undergraduate students were challenged to create original playable experiences inspired by DiGRA 2026. Using the conference theme, Intersectional Pleasures, alongside Irish culture, folklore, Maynooth University, game studies, and the DiGRA 2026 visual identity as inspiration.

From ghost-hunting adventures set around Maynooth University to games inspired by Irish mythology and St. Brigid's Cross, each project offers a unique interpretation of the conference and its themes. Together, they provide an opportunity to engage with DiGRA 2026 through play.

Whether you are attending the conference in person or online, we invite you to explore these student-created experiences and discover another side of DiGRA 2026.

DiGRA Ghost

Inspired by Maynooth University ghost stories, especially the legends surrounding Room 2 in the Rhetoric House, DiGRA Ghost is a one-level puzzle game about helping a misunderstood young ghost. Players explore a gothic campus environment inspired by Pugin Hall, find objects for different students, and help convince them that the ghost is not evil, just misunderstood. The game also uses DiGRA 2026’s purple and green colour palette, with St. Brigid’s Cross appearing in the environment.

Bhard

A top-down 3D puzzle game set in ancient Ireland, where players take on the role of St. Brigid and ward off mischievous Púca. Players throw St. Brigid’s Cross like a shuriken, bouncing it off the environment to clear each level in as few throws as possible. The game brings together St. Brigid’s Cross, Ogham-inspired UI, Irish harp sounds, and the DiGRA 2026 colour palette.

Ghosts of Maynooth

A ghost-hunting game set in Maynooth University Library. Players move through a dark library environment with a flashlight and a special scanner that reveals ghosts hidden from normal view. The scanner has limited battery life, making each encounter tense as players search for and catch the ghosts before the device runs out.

Inis Sidhe, The Island of Myth

A short exploratory game set on a floating island inspired by Irish mythology. Players rotate around the island, discover mythical creatures, and learn about them through an in-game bestiary. The island includes creatures and spaces inspired by Leprechauns, Selkies, Fairies, Púca, Giants, the Giant’s Causeway, Irish dolmens, and Maynooth’s Silken Thomas tree.

Missing Pieces

A 2D scavenger hunt set inside Maynooth University classrooms. Players search for “missing pieces”, objects inspired by well-known games such as Animal Crossing, The Legend of Zelda, and Mario, hidden across different rooms. The game plays with the idea of games inside a game, using 8-bit aesthetics and DiGRA’s green, purple, and blue visual palette.

Maze Across Two Worlds

A maze game inspired by the north and south campuses of Maynooth University. Players shift between two overlapping worlds, using the transition between them to access different parts of the maze. The game connects intersectionality to the idea of overlapping spaces and uses St. Brigid’s Cross as the key needed to reach the centre and escape.

Rothlú

A 2D, 8-bit puzzle-platformer set inside an old, overgrown Celtic castle. Each room contains a St. Brigid’s Cross that can rotate the space, shifting gravity and changing how objects, waterfalls, hazards, and pathways behave. Players also use a cloak mechanic to create missing platforms and bridges, turning St. Brigid’s Cross into the centre of the game’s puzzle system.

Cloak and Crowns

An interactive word puzzle inspired by St. Brigid and Irish culture. Players drag across a grid of connected letters to reveal hidden words linked to St. Brigid’s story, Irish heritage, and Irish-language clues. The game combines casual puzzle play with cultural learning, using pattern recognition, memory, sound, animation, and progression feedback to make language and folklore feel playful.
